I have done some further testing and it is the combination of MS SQL Server
2005 Express and this particular machine (or with Office) that is the
culprit: bare SQL Server finishes with the same message, the same SQL Server
install on another machine also with XP Pro but no Office completes without
problem.
main problem still remains: I cannot install BCM which was one of the main
reasons for upgrading to Office 2007 in the first place.....
